How to Prepare for your Newborn Portrait session

Book your session prior to baby arriving!

  • The best time to take newborn photos is 7-14 days after baby is born. This allows the baby to recover from the birth process and still be sleepy and cozy all swaddled up for those adorable wrapped pictures. This also usually falls before any baby rashes or skin issues start to pop up.
  • Once your baby arrives reach out to me ASAP, and we will work together to choose the best day to schedule photos.

The day of your session:

  • Pull out any sentimental items you want to be sure are photographed (also include what the items are in your questionnaire!)
  • Newborns like to be warm, so make sure the room we are taking photos in is nice and toasty. You might even consider bringing in a space heater.
  • If your baby uses a pacifier, have it on hand. Even if you don't plan to use a pacifier it may be helpful to use just for the newborn photos as it can really help to soothe and relax the baby.
  • Another tip to help ease baby is to turn on a sound machine. I usually try to bring one with me, but if you have one in the room already, even better!
  • If possible, try to keep the baby awake for 1 hour before the session. This makes those angelic sleeping images more likely.
  • Feed your baby immediately before your session start time. Full tummy = a happy & satisfied baby .
  • Have your newborn dressed in a diaper and blanket to start. Once I arrive, we will swaddle the baby and take some of the adorable wrapped photos prior to moving on to family portraits.
